Same shop, not the same car
Every gap below compares two drivers fielded by the same organization that race weekend — same shop, same pit crew pool, same engineering group. It is the closest same-team comparison NASCAR offers, but it is not the same claim F1 or MotoGP make about their teammates.
Cup Series engines come from four separate suppliers (Hendrick Motorsports, ECR, Roush-Yates, Toyota Racing Development) even between cars from one organization, and setup still varies car to car under the spec Next Gen chassis. Most NASCAR “teammates” are 2-4 separately run cars out of one shop, not one literally shared car. So read this as a measure of organizational strength and driver form together — not a clean isolation of driver skill from machinery.
Gaps are in grid positions, not seconds: NASCAR’s qualifying data doesn’t reliably carry comparable lap times across sessions, so a fabricated seconds figure would be false precision.
