Why this replaces a “Car Speed Index”
Rally has no qualifying lap and no single fastest-lap comparison the way a circuit series does, so a straight pace ranking can’t work the same way. This groups every crew’s stage times by true manufacturer brand(Toyota, Hyundai, Ford — not team/entrant name), and compares them only after correcting for road position: each stage time is expressed as a delta from that stage’s field median, not as a raw time.
Why road-position correction is mandatory:on loose surfaces (gravel, snow), the car that runs earliest on a stage sweeps it clear of loose surface for everyone behind — a later-running car’s raw time is systematically faster for a reason that has nothing to do with the car or driver. Comparing raw times between manufacturers would mostly measure who tended to run earlier on the road that weekend.

Where these numbers come from
Every completed stage from recent rallies, with per-stage times reconstructed from cumulative classification snapshots (differenced between consecutive completed stages) since no direct per-stage-time endpoint is exposed. Each entry’s delta from that stage’s field median is then grouped and medianed by manufacturer brand, parsed from the classification’s own manufacturer field. Negative is faster than the field median; positive is slower.
