Historic moments
2025 · Verstappen's ten-second lesson at Turn 5
A late safety car left Max Verstappen on hard tyres surrounded by cars on softs. He made contact with George Russell at Turn 5 while defending, was told to hand the place back and did - and still took a ten-second penalty that dropped him from fifth on the road to tenth. Oscar Piastri won ahead of teammate Lando Norris.
2016 · Verstappen's debut win for Red Bull
On his very first race for Red Bull, 18-year-old Max Verstappen won the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix to become Formula 1's youngest-ever race winner. Championship rivals Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg had collided with each other at Turn 4 on the opening lap, and Verstappen held off Kimi Räikkönen's chasing Ferrari for the rest of the race.
What makes it different
- Decades of pre-season testing here mean every team has more reference data for this track than any other, which is part of why it so rarely produces a surprise.
- The 2023 change reverted the final sector to the original fast right-hander, removing the slow chicane that had been in place since 2007.
- The circuit doubled as the finish point for Barcelona's 1992 Olympics cycling time trial, held the year after it staged its first Formula 1 race in 1991.
Home race
Home race for Fernando Alonso, Carlos Sainz.
