Historic moments
2021 · Pérez's first Mexican podium at home
Sergio Pérez became the first Mexican driver to stand on the podium at his home Grand Prix, taking third place behind Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton in front of more than 130,000 fans. He called it the biggest day of his career outside an actual win.
1990 · Mansell's outside pass at the Peraltada
Nigel Mansell went around the outside of Gerhard Berger through the flat-out, banked Peraltada corner in 1990 - one of the most fearless overtakes in F1 history, on a corner since replaced by the stadium chicane the lap now runs through.
What makes it different
- At roughly 2,240 m above sea level this is by far the highest round of the year - the air is about 22% thinner, which costs engine power and makes maximum downforce behave like a medium-downforce setup elsewhere.
- Thin air also means less cooling, so brake and power-unit temperatures are a live concern here in a way they are not at sea level.
- The lap runs through the Foro Sol baseball stadium, with grandstands on both sides of a slow chicane.
- The circuit is named for brothers Pedro and Ricardo Rodríguez, Mexican racing drivers - Ricardo died here in a practice crash for the first Mexican Grand Prix in 1962, aged just 20.
