Where these numbers come from
Car pace is the blended qualifying gap to the fastest team over recent weekends, in seconds - a figure a reader can check against a timing screen, unlike a rescaled index. Race pace is a different measurement on the same car: the median green-flag lap on Sunday against the quickest car in each race, with the first lap, pit in-laps and out-laps and anything more than 7% off a driver’s own median taken out. It is a percentage rather than seconds because a tenth is a different share of the lap at every circuit. The two orders don’t always agree, which is the point of showing both.
